Following their body-swapping adventures, Mitsuha and Taki are each driven to track down one another. Taki, a resident of Tokyo, sets out to locate Mitsuha, who resides in the outlying village of Itomori. He faces numerous challenges on the route, including the loss of his memories of Mitsuha and her town.
In a crucial scene, Mitsuha and Taki eventually cross paths, but Mitsuha seems to be losing her presence. She writes something on Taki’s hand before she vanishes, but he is unable to read it. But towards the end of the film, Taki is able to decipher the note Mitsuha wrote on his hand: “I love you.”
The answer to the query of whether Mitsuha survived the film’s events is a little unclear. According to the movie, a comet that impacted Earth three years before the events of the film obliterated Mitsuha and her town. Taki is able to establish an alternate timeline where Mitsuha and her community survive thanks to his deeds, though.
Finally, Mitsuha scrawled “I love you” on Taki’s palm before vanishing, and despite the fact that the film implies that Mitsuha and her town were obliterated, Taki was able to construct a different chronology in which they lived. The movie’s conclusion is open to interpretation, but one thing is for certain: many viewers were moved by the love tale between Mitsuha and Taki.
