The Controversy Surrounding Bodhidharma: Separating Myth from Reality

Bodhidharma, sometimes called Da Mo in Chinese, is a renowned character in the histories of Buddhism and martial arts. In addition to establishing the foundation for Shaolin Kung Fu, he is credited with introducing Chan Buddhism to China. His existence and genuine tale, though, are very controversial.

The Lankavatara Sutra and the Record of the Buddhist Monasteries of Luoyang are just two of the books that refer to Bodhidharma. According to these writings, he was an Indian Buddhist monk who visited China in the fifth or sixth century CE. He allegedly studied in meditation and martial skills at the Shaolin Monastery and was the third son of a Brahmin ruler.
